ok i decided to take down the previous post cause it wasn't too good, and since it isn't exactly fair to some people (especially geog RA) and that i did gain something out of this.

anyways.

we ponned yearhead+house assembly. they were filming us doing sth on kekulé and TNT. later when the film crew left we were reluctant to leave so we decided to have fun. I let the class listen to the Van Cliburn Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto 1+Rach 2 CD and people were like humming the D-flat major theme when they heard the 1st mvt.

After that we had some fun playing this very weird game which showed the power of wikipedia.

Game mission: reach an article x from an article y, solely via the mouse. AND WITHOUT the clicking of the "Random Article" button. Fastest wins (rather slowest loses).

So we were doing random ones, from "Methane" to "Karl Marx", and "Esplanade" to "Team Fortress 2" and "Carbon" to "Tchaikovsky". The best was still nigel's suggestion on "Liberalism" to "Laksa".

random cry of: Where's the laksa?

This shows easily why Wikipedia is the best encyclopedia.

Yay tmr chem RA dinner! looking forward to it.

THERMITE!

it was fun watching it live, especially when andrew wanted to disfigure himself and placed his head so close to the set-up as the fuse lit.

if you want a video, ask.

and boom!

i decided to go against my ethics and buy a piano concerto cd. yeah, but couldn't resist myself. "Van Cliburn: Tchaikovsky Piano Concero 1, Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto 2". And it's a SACD. Seriously I plan to commit suicide. I WENT AGAINST MY ETHICS! heck.

cbw has a truckload of cds. i merely borrowed "a few" and now i don't know how to stuff them all into my bag.

go for rise concert leh.

Thursday, October 25, 2007.

when i start putting dates as blog post titles you know something is wrong.

first: 3B lost as soon as i came to support.

second: just when i went down to the mrt station platform the train left.

third: when i went to music essentials they ran out of jargar cello A strings.

fourth: i decided to wait for bus 518 (and not take the mrt), and waited for 30+ minutes. 2 buses came (with a subtle difference: one was 518a, and the other was 518b. Being the freaking genius i am, i went on bus 518a and asked the driver, "Does this bus go to SAFRA Tampines?"

Driver (as the other bus, bus 518b left the bus stop): "No, not this one. It's 518b."

fifth: When I reached city hall, the train left before i could go in.

sixth: When i finally reached st. hilda's primary school, the general office was closed.

What luck.

But heck, today was a bomb of a day. Philo was fun, some replacement teacher came in and decided to give us a lecture on philo instead of letting us relax. We were initially not happy, but after the teacher (who was a nigerian, his accent was hard to catch) owned shukiat (who was being an idiot as usual) and zhiyi, we decided to pay attention, and it became a fun owning session, with the anime-watching people getting owned.

Chem was chem-.-, but we watched some "evolution" movie, and it was horribly funny, spamming "head and shoulders" shampoo at an alien. "Head and shoulders" shampoo FTW!

BTW: RI's being filmed as part of ChannelNewsAsia's documentary on good schools in Asia (incidentally we are the only school from Singapore). On Tuesday from 8-9.30 they will film the science labs (with special attention to us (our plant tissue culture group) at the life sciences lab), at 10-12 they are filming an RA lesson (incidentally ChemRA), and from 2-3.30 they will film a CCA (incidentally RISE). Aka I'm going to see the film crew like dunno how many times. But I guess they won't recognise me cause I'm putting on different uniform each time they film me (1st time lab coats, 2nd time normal sch uniform, 3rd time syf attire).

PS: Congrats 3B for making it to 4th for inter-class soccer! That proves muggers are multi-talented!

cheers to a 6/15 for ss.

and that has to come at my 50th post.

but heck. i'm not the worst. 6 is still decent. people get 4/15, 1/15, 0/15. and luckily my part1 was 11/15 (decent) so i'm running off with a 3.6 for ss. not exactly happy though.

at least my other 2 papers were decent. geog was a torture (for the examiner), and maths was great, near 100%.

scared of tomorrow.
VERY SCARED.

english was meh.

physics was not so well.

bio was so-so.

chemistry was bad. 78/80 (when i could have gotten 84), and WHY OH WHY DO THEY NOT ALLOW SECTION B BONUS TO BE ADDED TO SECTION C? i could have gotten full marks.

hmt was as usual, screwed.

math tmr should be fine, as in a 4 w/o ra moderation.

geog should be fine too, unlike my classmates in history who need to score very well.

but.

SS.

the horror stories, i have heard them all. Qn2a people are dead, apparently 1/2 the cohort failed Qn2a. I hope i'm not in that half.

People were crying after SS. That is enough to convince me not to think about anything else but SS.

Little man, big stick. How i hate you so much.

i couldn't be bothered at all about 377a.

for those hermits living in computer-game land, penal code 377a is with regards to the issue on homosexuality: whether gay sex should be banned. During the next Parliament sitting, they are going to discuss about this issue, and i frankly don't really care.

To me, 377a should be kept, seeing as "if it ain't broke, don't fix it", and it doesnt matter to me anyway (as if i am gay liddat. -.-). No harm right? And I don't exactly approve of homosexuality either.

But the issue is of what happens if it is kept/repealed. Reading through http://keep377a.com/Signatures.aspx and http://www.repeal377a.com/letter/signatories/
we see 2 different sides of Singapore. (anyway just go read, it provides you with the other dimension that you may miss out upon)

Depending on the result, it may seek to affirm our roots, or change our status. Do we want to stick to traditional ideals, or do we want to become a liberal democracy? Singapore is a unique mix of both-we are perhaps the only MEDC with a sizeable Chinese population, and in fact the only other country with a Chinese majority (sorry Taiwan and Hong Kong).

Confucianism is still entrenched in our society, giving us the ideals that we still hold dear today. One of these ideals is of the family, and that's where 377a comes in. The basic unit of a family does not consist of 2 males or 2 females, so why even call that a family?

Yet we seek to make ourselves on par with the liberal democracies of other continents, and those increasingly liberal countries accept and embrace the notion of homosexuality, believing in equal rights and no discrimination. Singapore is still not a liberal democracy, and Singaporeans are not going to receive that kind of freedoms given to liberal democracies like U.S.A. or Japan.

But must we be caught in a tug-of-war, where we have to either give up our roots and ideals, or do we have to sacrifice liberalism and the basic freedoms? It all boils down to the main difference between the Oriental and the West: which ideal is the most important.

But sadly, I foresee that 377a will be repealed, maybe not next Monday, not this year, but in the years to come. Pressure is piled on us by the liberal democracies, and as the liberal democracies dominate the world media, we will be ultimately forced to conform to the fact that homosexuality is acceptable (maybe not our generation, and not the current one, but those after us), and we will change.

But is it for the better, or for the worse? I guess only time will tell.

edit: looks like dumbledore would support the repeal of 377a eh.

YEO SHANG XUAN IS SCANDALOUS.

random.

Went to watch paganini violin concerto 1 yesterday with ben wee, and as usual the soloist never got the double harmonics right (actually for that matter, no soloist ever gets it right except for Michael Rabin, who died early). Nice though, and i finally got myself friends of sso card (was discounted, and with free goodies too).

Later we both went to changi airport to "bump" into our conductor, who was flying back last night. While we were preparing the tickets for nov 1 concert (hurry! buy from lumpy) and mugging chem, sx said he needed to go to terminal 2 for some strange reason. We all knew lar, he went there not to do a social survey on toilets (as was claimed) but rather to see his gf or sth.

We had this powerpoint slide with a pic of mr. sze, and the rise logo, plus a welcome message and a speech bubble which was originally meant to read "Half an hour break!!" (as usual, the joker shangxuan's idea).

When we were walking in t1 towards the skytrain, shangxuan was being his usual spastic self, walking and saluting as if he was the guy in the powerpoint slide show (which was for some strange reason still open for all to see) and worst of all, acting as if he was in a funeral, and droning with some spastic sad face (cause he was standing behind the trolley, and perched on top of the trolley was the laptop with the powerpoint slide show still running).

We went to t2 swensen's for supper, and when taking the lift down we realised sx was conspicuously absent. We found him at bk, and questioned him on his gf.

"The 2nd sofa there, you see?"

we were all howling with laughter after that. Ask me for the full joke, but nvm.

2 quotes of interest:

Lumpy and ben wee talk about sth with regards to the word umpteen, cant recall.
Lumpy: Ok then what is umpteen plus 1?
Ben Wee: 14 lor!
Lumpy stares in amazement.
Ben Wee: Isn't it 14? Umpteen is 13 mar!

When we were talking abt sx's new crush:
Ben Wee: Wah SX your crush very crushing leh, you might get crushed. (Ask me for the details)

What is the hardest thing to ever kill?

Ans: Time.

At the rate everyone is going, straits times obituaries will be filled up with ri people. Death Cert people in ICA will have a field day filling up ri students' cause of death as "boredom".

Singapore is like, the most boring place to ever be. I freaking can't wait for IR man. Went shopping on friday, and i now can't think of a good place to shop lor. Vivocity is -.-, Orchard was done, and amusement parks? How amusing.

Forced to stay at home today (cause there is like no where else to go), and i had to resort to reading my chem textbook over and over 3 times i guess. Finished 2 chapters of organic chem textbook, and had to resort to facebook and even gameboy to kill time. Even thought of re-dling maplestory, which is like so -.- lor. Luckily there's sth called "International Chemistry Olympiad past year papers" to do, which effectively kills time off.

If i die tmr, you guys should know why i died.

Prove that 3B is the best sec3/grade9 class in the world. (10)

to prove:
3B is the best sec3/grade9 class in the world:

ri/rgs are the 2 best schools in the world. -proof: rjc is the best jc in the world, since the single biggest source of ivy-league students in the world is rjc.

1) counting no. of RAs in class (math = 2, ignore overlaps)-we have 6 (chem) + 10 (phy) + 13*2(26)(math)=42. owns all classes, including classes from rgs and other ri classes.

2) we are multi-lingual. no. of 3rd lang (not counting msp) ppl in class: 3+2+4=9, owns all classes. furthermore we can speak vietnamese (as in Long and Gia), we can speak malay (brian and shukiat), and chinese and english (duh.) and french, german and japanese. that's like 6 languages!

3) people taking either 11 subjects and/or ra: 30. only dennis and the vietnamese scholars don't, but Gia is top in CEP, Long is prefect-nominee and Dennis was offered RA but rejected it.

4) 3B is artistic as well as being good on the com. We have the most MEP people (6 people) and the most CEP people (5 people), as well as having the top in the respective subjects (Gia for CEP, Barry for MEP.)

5) 3B is the best class in humanities (no one knew that.) Even though we have no humanities RA, we are THE ONLY CLASS to have all 4 humanities subjects (25 History, 3 Geography, 1 English Lit (benyong lol), 5 Chinese Lit). And furthermore our class has the best average for both geog and lit (not sure abt the other 2), and we have the best in lit rp (apparently not so-depends on eoys).

6) 3B has vincent. i mean, it's VINCENT TJENG. vincent brian arifin tjeng. the test for RA. the 7 RA guy.

7) 3B is very talented in sciences and math. It has top in math RA (barry), did best for SMO, had all 4 people representing RI to fly to changchun for inter-city math competetion (HY, Vincent, Ivan, Barry). Did i mention, we have IVAN too. It has the highest in chem RA (barry), and has the highest average for chem RA. It has most people in physics RA, and has the top 3 in it (Vincent Tjeng, 2nd highest: HY, 3rd: Mingjun). And 3/4 of the main team for IJSO are from 3B (Barry, HY, Vincent), and 2/3 of the final team in NSC was from 3B (Barry, Vincent). And we have a Bio RA teacher as our form teacher. Therefore our sciences and math are the best.

8) 3B has the highest person in terms of authority-Chew Keng Chee (CEC Council Chair).

9) 3B is the best in project-room games (including pingpong, soccer etc.) We practice hardcore (cough Vincent HY Jinghui Jie Liang etc.etc. cough)

10) 3B is like so imba-WE WON NAPFA FITTEST CLASS AWARD. and thats considering that we have 12 people in musical groups-more than 1/3 of our class! (12/33 > 1/3)

Therefore this can conclusively prove that 3B is the best sec3 class in the world.

yay went shopping (where else? cd shops lar) with zhiyi, ben wee, ruiheng (rise JC1 senior) and jeremy sia.

Got myself a "Dvořák, Saint-Saëns Cello Concertos-Jacqueline du Pré" CD. Never spotted it until ruiheng pointed it out.

Jeremy lent me a "Dvořák, Saint-Saëns Cello Concertos-Mstislav Rostropovich" CD which he bought. Amazing, now I have 2 CDs with exactly the same concertos except with a different soloist (naturally, different orchestras and conductors) and a different track order.

Quite cool eh? (As usual, who wants can ask (i know tony is dying for du Pré's Saint-Saëns), but at most i can give the mp3 version of the rostropovich cd)

At Pizza Hut, when zhiyi was arguing about a 10 cent coin change:

Jeremy:10 cents very important ok! 10 cents can mean the difference between a Mercedes-Benz and a Mercedes-Benz with a packet of tissue paper ok?

When Jeremy was accused of faking:
Jeremy: I never fake ok? I got play for syf hor.
Ben Wee: I didnt even see your liuqin in the photo lor. You damn pro faker, no need instrument also can fake.

yeah, its all over. to those with an exam tomorrow (aka mep-pers, cep-pers, aep-pers, msp-pers) all the best and do well!

geog was like typical geog -.- every time a geog exam comes my hand will come out of the exam with a few more muscles. Today's paper was unbearable hand pain, and you cant blame me for that. wrote 11 sides, went a little crazy.

ok and now for the fun part:
http://www.raffles.sg/

Firstly, rp states that "there will be no exams, or tests." that's what they said to me in 2004.
in 2005 they said it's not an exam, it's merely an assignment that is time-based.
in 2006 they said it's not an exam, it's a test.
in 2007 they said it's not an exam, it's an end of year EXAM.

yeah.

secondly, they go on to introduce RA, which REALLY means RETARD ACADEMY. it's not raffles academy, its merely a guise to not let others know their true intents.

thirdly, in the RA page, they happily claim that "The Raffles Academies are centres for specialised learning of select subjects and students will be provided with specialised teachers, special resources, space, equipment, cutting edge research and experimentation." when they mean cutting edge research they don't mean it figuratively, they take it literally. as in CUTTING EDGE. where the research (tool) has cutting edges.

you know, a burette with a chipped end. when you accidentally touch it it hurts and blood comes out.

and when they mean special resources and space they really intend to make the resources special. like a broken table, malfunctioning air-con, shaky table with dented sides, or something else.

yeah why do they do this i wonder.
i know, its cause it's RA. Retard Academy. to make the retards become more retarded.

Wednesday, October 10, 2007.

i realised (long ago) i am a minority in my own class, which is in itself a minority.

When treasurer calls for money, i never need to pay up. It's cause he calls for math rp, chem rp and history notes' money, all 3 of which i dont take (not in 3B lar). That was good. Until today.

As i look at my classmates going to kbox, going to people's houses to play xbox, i am stuck at home, remembering that the main causes of desertification is agriculture and overgrazing, as well as overpopulation. Today, after the bio eoy, immediately after the teacher said "you may go." i heard a deafening roar. I was initially shocked, why the roar, i thought, their exams arent over yet, there's still geog.

And i realised, i was an odd one out, a geog student in the sea of history students.

Yeah, so as i see everybody's msn name being changed to "freedom", "it's over" and etc, i am left to rue what could have been for me, if i took history. Jerald came over and told me, "Hah. we get to slack now!" I dont blame him, i would have done that too. Would i have to suffer that badly now?

But i guess, "it's the choices that define a man."

Yeah, tomorrow 3B will be unique once more. At morning assembly tomorrow, there will only be 2 people taking the pledge and queueing up. I mean, it's so fun now, maybe i get to take attendance! -.-

I do not regret taking geog, i have always loved it. In fact if i was allowed to pick RAs i liked, i would have taken geog as 3rd choice (after chem and math). And i have made many enemies by supporting geog in my predominantly history class.

To all the history people: Good job for surviving the EOYs, and have fun slacking! Remember though, tomorrow at 8-9.30 (and at 10.30-12.30 for Ben Yong's english lit and the chinese scholars taking chinese lit) please remember the minority who are suffering, like how i remembered you guys yesterday at 11-12.30.

I AM SOME DUMB.

bio and physics today. bio was like pure regurgitation. yet after mugging so hard on thrombokinase i could still get it wrong. there goes 2 marks from mcq (at least). and open ended wasn't helpful either. Apparently i got the 1st qn (the 4 mark one) wrong. there goes my marks.

physics was some dumb. bonus was familiar YET i stoned at it and in the end i couldn't do it. there goes 5 marks. 5 FREAKING DUMB MARKS. i mean its just sine and cosine and some crap, YET I CANT DO IT. and then the light qn i lost 4 marks for not knowing how to answer it. last second i figured that i could use tangent, and then teacher said "time's up." and i bet a few careless mistakes must be coming my way like s.f. and mcq.

There's my 2 sciences gone. freaking gone. bio was 84 while physics was 91. and now i bet its going to drop badly.

nevermind, there's tomorrow to look forward to. geog. MUST GET 34 and above. actually i need only 30 but nvm.

and to all who have finished EOYs: good for you. and please do not suan geog students please.

Tuesday, October 9, 2007.

yeah. 3 more! gogo bio physics geog.

maths today was like typical rp math, way easier than all the killer tests we had. The bonuses were bad though, i nearly could do qn14, if not for my calculator lying to me and not saying the answer was 2. Arrgh nevermind, as long as i get 4.0 i will be happy. low, high 4.0 doesnt matter.

the next 3 tests are good, cause i dont need much to do well. bio requires 73.5/100, geog requires 30/40 and physics is the best: 50/80. This roughly translates to me being able to slack a little. But if i screw up (especially for bio and geog) its not too good.

Arrgh mug.

cheers. 4 left! (ya meppers, mspers and ceppers remember i had my elective eoy long ago)

chinese 1st. chinese as usual is -.- , but i am confident of not screwing up since i know i did well for ciyu and yanyuguanyongyu.

chem was next. after being chased out of 3A and 3C (i merely said i was going to fail chem) we sat for the paper. And in typical lumpy style I scribbled over the 3-mark question ("explain why SiO2 is a solid at rtp while CO2 is a gas at rtp") which only provided 7 lines. I used up 26 lines i think. better than my average of 4 lines per mark, not bad, not bad. (that was considering some lines where 1 word=1 line)

Ya there was a chem-ra only question which involved plum puddings and stuff. It was a tikam question, and as expected majority of chemra knew answer while nearly no one in rp knew (but they guessed right)

I was trying not to sleep so i wrote nonsense somewhere in the paper, including weird comments like "propanal", "XePtF6", "chlorofoam" and stuff.

Tomorrow, math. 71.5/80 for a 4.0 (without RA moderation). Work hard lumpy.

i spent the whole freaking day mugging chinese (not to say i am even done with it yet) and realised i never touched chem, not for the past month or so.

AND TOMORROW'S THE FREAKING CHEM EOY.

ya that translates to "lumpy is dead."

my chem file lies happily in dunno where waiting for me to open it and read through. that also translates to "lumpy gg."

arrgh nvm lar. fail then fail lor.

day one passed. hate the CH3CHOHCOOH building up in my right hand.

eng was quite fun. some random debate of the meaning of "war" ensued and the litra students saved me by telling me the answer was "war". Essay was fun, i wrote a lot of SS and even inserted "thinker, leader, pioneer" somewhere. It helps to be propagandistic (hopefully).

lemme say, i know i screwed up SS. question one was like "huh?" and i stoned at it for 15 min without realising i could actually start on the much more simple qn2. But i crapped the whole qn1 up, and till now i didnt know what i was writing. but i need just a 22/30 for 4.0 so it's not so bad.

Now for next week:
monday: chinese (screwed), chem (quote majority of chemRA students: what's there to mug?)

tuesday: maths (die. must get at least 72/80)

wednesday: physics (which i can afford to screw up (aka get 50/80)), bio ((73.5/100) mug.mug.mug.)

thursday: geog ((30/40) mug.mug.) and then i have to make my freaking ic.

friday: after benwee's MEP EOY jeremy and i are planning to have some mad celebration at HMV (where else?) and we will most prob go watch a movie or 2.

Let's just all fail and get retained.
