yeah. "happy" birthday to myself. no wait, it's more like "happy mugging day".

i refuse to comment on my english and japanese marks, cause i lost 2 4.0s in 1 day. That majorly sucks, although i get UNSW maths medal which is scant consolation.

reminding myself what's there to mug this weekend (including those which i have finished mugging) :
english: Compre questions technique, rubrics for commentary writing.
maths: surds, coord geom, graphical solutions, quadratic, angle properties of circles, r and f theorem, trig, log, linearlaw, curvesketch, stats.
chinese: 第7,8,20,21,23,25,27,31课,谚语,惯用语
bio: not this weekend.
chem: not planning to mug.
phy: maybe only energy+work+power this weekend.
geog: natural disasters
ss: democracy (that's why it's worth reading the news about myanmar's political unrest)

wow. the list is huge. notice i'm leaving the most intensive subject (aka bio) to last.

hiatus, perhaps till 11/10/07. that's the last day i can make my ic, and that's why it sucks being born during this period.

and thanks to all who wished me a happy birthday!

ok i am freaking happy. although i should not be happy and relaxed when i have an eoy tomorrow. ps this has nothing to do with birthdays or any events around the corner.

something seemingly unrelated:

there are 3 types of people when it comes to buying and listening music. rating them in terms of sanity (1 being most sane, 3 being insane)

1) these people listen to one song, and to them it does not matter at all who performed it. So they listen so that they can listen to the tune and nothing much else.

2) these people listen to one song, but to them who performs it is important, although they don't really need to know which recording the song was (aka which version it is). They listen to one version and assume the performer only recorded it once.

3) these people listen to one song, and to them who performs it is important, but furthermore, which version it is is also important to them. It matters to them when the song was recorded, and under what circumstances.

Which group are you? Join lumpy, who is happily in group 3 and is mentally unsound.
I FEEL HAPPY. /random/

ok some people want a translation, so here it is-
title: cello concertos
my first post written only in japanese and nothing else!

recently i have begun listening to cello concertos. a week ago i went to orchard hmv and to my surprise i saw this cd: "Tchaikovsky-Rococo Variations, Dvořák Cello Concerto", and i bought it.

performer(s): mstislav rostropovich, berlin philharmonic orchestra
conductor: Herbert von Karajan

After i bought this cd i started to like listening to cello concertos.
Now my most favourite cello concerto is elgar cello concerto. besides that i also like shostakovich cello concerto 1. It is hard to listen to at the start, but shostakovich's music are hard to listen to anyway.

the youtube vid is the 1st mvt of shostakovich cello concerto 1, soloist: mstislav rostropovich.

ps: who wants the cd? i can lend it to you-it's the best d
vořák cello concerto/tchaikovsky rococo-variations recording around-3 greats, the conductor (karajan), the orchestra (berlin philharmonic), the soloist (rostropovich, the best cellist the world has ever seen)

close match. in fact taking into consideration all the factors, i really thought rgs would have won if things went their way. seriously lor, their buzzer round was great-truly a match well watching. So if you have time this thurs (unlike me) , go watch it. 7.30pm, channel5. enjoy while lumpy suffers from heart attacks due to excessive japanese mugging.

so in the end, only scgs suffered from buzzerophobia. and we wasted so much time worrying about them when we should have just worried about rgs-seeing as they became some imba freak during buzzer (quite unexpected, but vincent barry and nigel coped well). interestingly ri got 12 for demo.

"SO WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR NOW? GET THE NEW LOTUS EFFECT SPRAY NOW!"

GOOD JOB GUYS!

thomas ang (giving advice to the team): hey when you reach the last questions and you have a lead of 2 or above, SLAM THE BUZZER.

thomas ang: then later, stone for a few seconds and do this:
thomas ang looks left and says: you know?
thomas ang looks right and says: you know?
thomas ang's reply: "Err, i know, but I don't want to tell you. JAAAAACK."

nice beautiful cloudless day today.

i hate myself for my freaking birthday. WHY MUST MY FREAKING BIRTHDAY BE NEAR A SCREWED-UP PERIOD? Now i never celebrate my birthday in peace. The thoughts in my mind of the days leading up to my birthday were never on the birthday itself, so much so that i forgot how it feels like to be having a birthday. Ya ever since 2005 I have always been so unlucky to have a MAJOR exam (aka 3rd lang eoy) falling the day before my birthday, so much so that I DREAD THE DAYS LEADING TO MY BIRTHDAY. how screwed up am i, i wonder. This year is worse. EOYs (40%. WTH.) are pushed forward by a week, so I am deaded.

Ya, nice cloudless day today. how nice and sweet-if only you didn't have to mock me now, of all times.

7 more days, and i dread them.

LOL today's buzzer round owned!

3 teams-team RI: Nigel, Barry, Vincent.
team "SCGS": Si Kai, Zi Xiang (2 sec 4s), Daniel (3C)

and the imba pwnage own-all team:

team "RGS": Huang Wenjie, me, Tang Huiyao.

Final score: out of 6 rounds, and 1 tied round between "SCGS" and RI, results were:

"SCGS"-2
RI-2

and overall champion (although i would never want this to happen in real life):
"RGS"-3!

I tell you, huiyao and wenjie were super-ownage. everytime any bio question came up, either huang wenjie would get it right or no one would. everytime any particle phy qn came up, HY would 100% slam the buzzer and own it.

And i sucked so badly i refuse to mention it. I even managed to get the simple question "Which of the following is a lanthanide?" wrong. I mean, i feel super-demoralised. But for me buzzing randomly and getting the question on MO theory correct (question: Which equation is used to calculate the atomic orbitals in MO theory (or sth liddat)? Ans: Schroedinger's equation) i feel quite happy.

A funny incident:
Bio question flashes on board.

HY slams buzzer.

HY: Wenjie, answer leh.
Wenjie: But I don't know! Why you go and slam?
Lumpy bursts out laughing.

Plants can down 20 too. That's what I discovered.

Ok i am worried. ri needs to do a thomas ang desperately.

'06 finals:
cheryl liew: Name...
thomas ang slams buzzer viciously.

cheryl liew: 2 points to RI!

cheryl liew: Next question, ...
thomas ang slams buzzer loudly.

cheryl liew: Another 2 points to RI!

*repeats itself again and again*

Ok at this rate we seriously need to slam buzzer like crazy. RGS and SCGS do not suffer from buzzerophobia (as what I saw) so we need to train RI's team like crazy.

Mug chem, guys. Mug physics, guys. Mug bio, guys. MOST IMPORTANTLY: MUG MATHS. take advantage of the other 2 schools' weak subject, and show what ri (and changchun) is made up of.

And since we are likely to not get any eureka card, we might as well train for buzzer and buzzer only. so if you guys need chem buzzer round training, DO COME TO ME. i wanna make sure ri can 100% do maths and chem.

Do well, do your best, and auspicium melioris aevi (although it is horribly cliché).

Ok I AM STUMPED.

my freaking lousy bio textbook screams that reducing sugars are reducing sugars only because there is the presence of an aldehyde or/and ketone group. our bio teacher has been teaching us that.

I have no probs with the aldehyde part-it makes common sense.
Primary alcohol-(oxidation)-aldehydes-(oxidation)-carboxylic acids

BUT EVERYONE KNOWS, A KETONE GROUP CANNOT BE FREAKING OXIDISED UNLESS BY VERY STRONG OXIDISING AGENTS! (F2 not so sure, conc. H2Cr2O7/H2CrO4 surely, hot HNO3 ya, but anything else????)

Secondary alcohol -(oxidation)-ketones

SO WHO SHOULD I TRUST? my bio textbook, which says on page 34 (i think) that NH3 can't form hydrogen bonds OR general chem which evidently says ketones can be reduced easily to secondary alcohols but evidently says that that it is quite impossible to oxidise ketones.

Look ar-

Primary alcohol- RCH2OH + O - RCHO (aldehyde) + O - RCOOH
Secondary alcohol - R1CHOHR2 + O - R1COR2 (ketone) then STOP! No more dehydrogenation can occur since no more hydrogen left to dehydrogenate! thus oxidation (loss of hydrogen) cannot occur!
Tertiary alcohol another thing lar, R1COHR2R3 is resistant to oxidation.

SO WHAT NOW FOR EOYS? TRUST THE LOUSY BOOK AND PASS OR TRUST MYSELF AND FAIL? arrgh.

p.s. 10 more days. can't wait any longer.

僕はとてもうれしい!
For most people-うれしい is ureshii, which means happy.

Got back double marks today. Math ra CCT4 was ok, though i could have done with less careless mistakes and better presentation. Ah well, 26/30. Then portfolio. WOOT 23.5/26! I mean I'm like super lousy in maths, and i got some imba mark like 23.5? Ok my reflections were chao long and my topical research was on some weird topics (coughCHEMcough, i mean if i get a chance to choose any random topic, obviously chem right?). But can do better.

Then Japanese. I was like-ok. certain 3.6, since i sucked so badly for ca3. Then my sensei printed out our scoresheet. WOOTS 79.6! And that's not even including the 6 bonus marks everyone is getting. That means i need to lose at most 17.5 marks for eoys. Quite hard, since i always royally screw up essay. But good lar, looks good to me.

We were having NSC buzzer round training, was Huiyao VS Vincent.
Can't remember who: "In 1923, there were only 3 people who understood general relativity. Name them."

Huiyao: *Slams table in lightning speed* "Einstein, Eddington and..."
HY: "errr...."
HY: "wait. I know this."
HY: "errr........"

The ultimate revelation:
HY: "F***!" (loudly)
Table bursts out in laughter.

BTW: Want to watch the REAL DEAL? Sunday's NSC finals are NOTHING compared to this-all the teams in Sunday's NSC suffer from buzzerophobia, so it's going to be boring. BUT. Friday's "NSC" promises to be an exciting event- with Nigel, Barry, Vincent (aka real NSC team) facing off against the challengers-Huang Wenjie, Me (lumpy) and Huiyao. THIS MEANS I NEED TO MUG CHEM. LIKE SIAO.

PS. To Mr. Sze, we wish you bon voyage! Have fun in Russia!

Monday, September 17, 2007.

I am NOT good at emo-ing, i shall frankly say. I do not slash wrists, I do not stone and sob for an hour or two, etc, etc.

But I do emo through listening to some pieces which are so darn beautiful i don't know what to say.

3 pieces today, one being so famous most people don't know the original (intended) soloist.

1) not as touching but surely emotional. Just wait till you reach the octaves, and you will feel all the sorrow, emotion pouring out of Shostakovich's work. He wrote it during the worst period of his life, when he was persecuted and defamed, and forced to sleep outside his door for fear of the government.

Kogan's interpretation is fast, but highly charged. I still don't know how I can enjoy such a piece played so fast, only Kogan's one makes me enjoy it done fast.

Passacaglia (3rd mvt) from Shostakovich Violin Concerto No. 1 (Op. 77/99), played by Leonid Kogan (pity i can't listen to the cadenza or the 1st 17 bars)

2) Fell in love with it yesterday, when I was Googling for more Rostropovich material and wondered why he never recorded elgar cello concerto. When I heard this i knew.

There was a reason why Rostropovich never recorded this piece even though it was a key piece in the cello repertoire. He said, there was no point when he could not do any more to it as compared to the best recording around, that by Jacqueline du Pré.

Horribly sentimental, my heart nearly broke listening to it for the 1st time.
Elgar Cello Concerto (Op. 85) 1st mvt, Adagio-Moderato, Jacqueline du Pré

3) everybody's favourite emo piece. schindler's list.

I can't post it here since the authors of the video decided to disable linking. I shall give the link however.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ueWVV_GnRIA
Wonderful soloist, Itzhak Perlman.

Wednesday, September 12, 2007.

It's been 3 months.

Close to 3 months-but those 3 months have flown by so fast. Yet I remember it like it was yesterday.

Those 3 months of stress, homework and school made me forget the wonderful memories. They were pushed to the back of my mind by the stress and homework, never to be retrieved. But today I remembered the fun. The excitement. The joy.

I was preparing for 3rd language oral (Ya majorly screwed up. 75% only! Looks like I am doomed for 3.6 3rd lang this year-seeing as i also got lousy CA1/2/3 marks.) My sensei trained us to answer the possible questions, and when me and my friend did a possible question list-i saw this question:
外国へ行った事がありますか。(Have you ever gone overseas?)
I was preparing for the next few questions that were bound to come-one was どこへ行きましたか。(Where did you go?).

And then I remembered New York.

I remembered the fun we had, the pillow fights (which did not involve me) and the card games, the Zhiyi-style bidding ("7 NO TRUMP!"), the nights we had around Times Square, the frequent visits to the CD megastore (with Ben Wee), the standing ovation amongst 2000+ Americans(we were strangers), the imba hand I got while playing bridge (I had 10 spades in my hand-nearly won 7 no trump), and most importantly, our bond we made.

I guess no chemistry can ever explain this bond; it is unique and special. It cannot be broken by heat; it stays true even under attack by free radicals; halogenation, nucleophilic substitution does nothing; it is even more stable than the C-triple bond-O bond with delocalisation. Why? It was the fun we had, that makes us invulnerable to these bond-breakers. Our bond is everlasting-it will remain for posterity.

We will remember the fun we had. We will remember the hard work and its payouts. We will most importantly, never forget Carnegie '07.

4 of the 5 members of our EXCO stayed together for the whole trip with the same group. We were really closely bonded, and hopefully neither of us will forget all the games, excitement and fun we had had on this trip.

But I hope, as time flies (like arrows, fruit flies like bananas), we will not let the barrage of tests, assignments and newer memories erode the memories-fine memories, that will aid us in improving our CCA. Fine memories that will bond us forever.

Carnegie '07. We must never forget.

Ok. DMP is officially slack.

DUH.

Ok, but i mean, even the never-ever-slept-in-class lumpy was tempted to, during CLE (leadership challenge). Maths was stale-Mr. Chandru (the (rumoured) next year's Sec 3 RA teacher) kept on emphasizing something about trig and memorising matrices-and barry and I happily rushed through the whole worksheet.

Chem was quite amusing. I had my Chem teacher (Mr. Ong) as DMP teacher and to add on i had Huiyao in my class. When he left the class he promised never to ever sit beside me again during chem. Ben Yong was at the back laughing at huiyao's foolishness to even try to sit beside me for 1 lesson of chem-he knows better not to.

Anyway huiyao vandalised my paper as revenge for me spamming chem terms in class-look:

Good question. I dunno seriously.

if no7 and no10 are together, will it be a good thing?
I dunno, both are monitors of their classes and both are very responsible people. Maybe they go along.

I thought that was granted. I mean they are both in math ra+phy ra+mep, and they seem unseparable.

what is no2 studying about?
Music lar. DUH.

when was the last you talked to no3?
If I'm not wrong it SHOULD be friday.

what kind of music does no.8 like?
No prizes for guessing-classical piano.

does no1 have any siblings?
One younger brother in p4, studying in cat high.

will you woo no3?

have you tried developing feelings about no8?
HUH? my feelings all lie within chemistry, and his feelings lie within maths/physics.

where does no9 live?
Apparently lakeside.

are no5 and 1 best friends?
Like duh-they sit beside each other during class.

does no7 like no2?
They sit beside each other during class-what do you expect?

how you get to know no2?
CCA-like duh.

is no7 the sexiest person in the world?
I thought no4 was the sexiest person.

There you go-and just for laughs.

Lumpy concludes: HE IS A PHLAILURE (aka failure for those who can spell).

I went to HMV citylink mall and spent years there. I mean what is there to see? It's merely 2 shelves of music CDs-come on which sane guy actually can stand standing around looking at 2 shelves of a music shop for at least 40 minutes?

Deciding between 2 cds-is it so freaking hard? Ok it was hard lar-one was perlman's shostakovich1+glazunov vk (which i bought in the end) and the other was oistrakh's shostakovich1+tchaikovsky vk (i didnt get it as i was worried i already had oistrakh's tchaikovsky vk). 2 CDs and 40 minutes. I AM CHAMPION.

Ok i give up. I think my friends never will want to shop with me ever-look how scary I am. And that's even before I go into a bookshop with chem textbooks and reference books.

Welcome all, and presenting the most "spastic person on earth" (quote-chu ben wee):

PICTURE CENSORED-R21.

Ok I shan't be so bad, but I did write a bio of this poor guy which stated he was going to die on 7/7/2007-he proved me wrong. When you're that good in maths you can even prove such stuff.

He plays some censored instrument-sadly he can't tell a weird-looking plucked instrument from
Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
Amazing that he claims to be able to play the "violin". I wanna see for myself.

And ya, apparently he (insert verb here)-es some RISE people. Some people (coughYeoShangXuan) even got tailed by him-I mean, of all people why go after corrupt prefects?

Ok lar he's a nice guy-he did like 100% of RE last year for me and he also "saved" me during those maths lessons when I was sick-ya and why didn't he take my MathRA TA when I was in IMCB I wonder-even went out to watch harry potter on the preview day without me.

Urg, finally got to use the com after 2 days.

Yesterday the Chem RA guys went to Sci. Center for this quite cool talk by this scientist, and sadly I only remembered 2 things about this talk: 1) The speaker is really good at publishing papers, and 2) The speaker's mentor has a habit of making mistakes which leads to the speaker publishing papers.

Later we got treated to lunch at Pizza Hut by our wonderful chem teacher, Mr. Ong. Then Zhao Kai and I went to East Coast Park from Jurong East by MRT/bus. Quite cool, lugging five 2L-bottles around the whole island.

RISE BBQ was pwnt. We reached there and then played games like Bridge (in sch uniform for that matter) and soccer (also in sch uniform). Kai Cheng presented Mr. Sze's Teacher's Day present to him. Then I went cycling with Shawn Neo (sorry for the cut, so sorry!).

Cycling in East Coast Park, in (semi) darkness, and in school uniform, is really ownage.

SX came to me and told me this "story":
Mr. Sze told him that he dreamt he would be "sick", and "dreamt" that the EXCO would be beside him when he was sick, at home for the rest of Thursday. So as loyal and faithful people we went to Mr. Sze's house today and played random games.

And for 2 consecutive lunches I got treated to Pizza Hut, free of charge. xD

PS: To Barry and Ben Yong, shut up. You know what I am referring to.

I guess some of these quotes are so famous I don't need to name sources. Today I will only be doing students' quotes.

Everyone's "favourite":
"I KILL YOU!" (ivan-carrying a pen and swinging it wildly at the person)

Ultimate Annoyance:
"La La La La La......" (zhiyi-cupping his ears and "dancing")

Random:
"打架啊,打架!" (huiyao)

Total b***h:
Zhao Kai: "Excuse Me, I AM Pamela Anderson."
Andrew: "Oh, I AM JESSICA ALBA."
Zhao Kai: "Oh, what are your F-cups compared to mine? Mine are H-cups."

The quoted-too-many-time quote:
"Ok that's it Jeremy. Our friendship is over like Ovaltine." (Ben Wee)

1 day later:
"Jeremy that's it. Our friendship is over."(Ben Wee)

1 day later:
"Jeremy our friendship is over. I don't want to talk to you."(Ben Wee)

If cats have 9 lives, Jeremy and Ben Wee's friendship must have at least 1000 lives.

Another favourite:
"I want to do maths!" (Ivan-when deprived of it)

Horribly amusing:
"Shit (Insert name of girl here) is dao-ing me. I feel so 失败." (Barry)

The blatant rip-off:
"Walao doubt my sincerity lar." (Shang Xuan-style BLATANTLY copied from Nicholas Hsien)

My quote:
"I'm busy slacking you nut!" (Can't remember when I said it)

Will be back with more.

I thought this incident was way more random than the other events yesterday, which included the spastic Teacher's Day Celebration (a good job there Nick Pat Aaron Tiong and co.) and RAGE 12 Vivace (Good job HY Barry Aaron Tang and co., but incidentally, MB's "Con Brio", GE's "Vivace", SE+RV's "?") I think either the Phantom or the party props piece would have beaten "Skeletons" in terms of comedy level! ROFL.

After RIGE concert I took the MRT home (unlike rich kids who get chauffeured by their dads). On the east bound train I was stuck beside a Japanese woman and her 6-7 years old daughter. This is their conversation (Japanese translated and italicised):

At Kallang:
Mum: So noisy! Singaporeans are so noisy.

Later,
Mum: Mary-chan, do you like the Chinese language? I don't like it, when the old uncles speak it it's very noisy.
Mary: Oh.
Mum: Mary-chan, I brought you here to learn English, the Singaporean English standard is quite ok.

Repeated a few times:
Mum: So noisy! I can't take it anymore. No space!

At Paya Lebar:
Mum: Why can't the people just get off? Mary-chan, don't you think so? Mary-chan, what are you doing? Stand up! Silly, don't lie on the floor! Get it?
Mary: Yes.

At Kembangan:
Mum: There's 2 seats! Mary-chan, hurry!

And the story ends here, cause I never caught a single word after that-they got the seats.

Quite interesting.
PS. THANKYOUMILLIONS Ben Wee for the 10cd Oistrakh set! And before I forget, a happy (early) 15th Birthday to you!
